The farms parkland and woodland that surround the workshop provide most of the materials for my work. I use reclaimed wood from gates and fences and dismantled barns and buildings. I coppice Hazel and pollard Willow for my bent wood chairs. Coppicing and pollarding has been practiced for centuries in Britain as a sustainable timber harvesting technique.
I collect ‘bonewood’, branches or even complete trees that have died but remained standing to be weathered by the elements into beautifully sculpted shapes. I wait sometimes years for branches to fall or a tree to be felled and I am a familiar site on the ‘scrap’ pile at my local sawmill.
